When a celebrity finds him or herself affiliated to a political party, some people term it as either a way to promote his or her brand or basically a means to benefit financially.
Here in Ghana, most celebrities who are affiliated to a particular political party are mostly musicians or actors who are seen or termed as influencers.
Samini, Sarkodie, David Prince Osei, Diana Asamoah are amongst many other celebrities who are affiliated or have endorsed a particular political party in recent years.
Some fans of the above celebrities might not be followers of the party but would one way or the other be in support because their faves are affiliated to the party.
According to Michael Owusu Addo also known as Sarkodie, being a benefactor of the Free Senior High School has and would still make him stand by the ruling party New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“What I said, he Nana Addo should ‘toaso’, I stand by it because I think I benefited from Free Education directly and I have the right to say I endorse that because this is directly, ”he said.
He said his mum caters for some young ladies who at a point were to be taken to school and they benefited from the programme.
“My mum has these girls we’ve been supporting. At first, she would call asking me to help. I am not saying it is much but just the fact that I am not even hearing that, it came from that place. And I was specific about what I was endorsing, he added.
In an interview with 3FM, Sarkodie said he knew his song “Happy Day” which he stood by his Nana Toaso lyrics, which was released during the 2020 elections would be misconstrued and would make headlines.
“I knew the Nana Toaso part will be misconstrued but that is the music part of me,” he noted.
The multiple award winner who is one of Ghana’s best rappers acknowledge the fact that yes the country is indeed in crisis and people are really going through alot.
“But of course, the country is worse, we are in serious crisis and people are really suffering,” he added.
Sarkodie in the past years was one of the artists who released a couple of songs when Ghana was in crisis under the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) lead by John Dramani Mahama.
He released songs titled ‘Dumsor’, ‘Inflation’, and ‘Masses’ to tackle the pressing issues at the time and this got a lot of people talking.
Some people are of the view that currently things are just as it was during the times of John Dramani Mahama and are expecting him to also release a song as well.
